The Mervyn’s store went out of business a couple of years ago. I thought the broken sign coupled with the obviously empty store commented on our broken economy, thus taking the assignment a little deeper.

    The lightning bolt apostrophe in the sign, with the clouds overhead, adds to the sense of broken, too. What was once an animating force is now just a squiggle on a broken sign; or the flash of a storm that leaves wreckage behind.
